What Happens
in the End

Ensuring the used capsules and machines are effectively recycled at their end of life is still a challenge. It requires the implementation of an economically and environmentally sound collection system, which is also easy to use for the consumers.

This should be done country by country to take into account the various local contexts. The success of these programs also depends on the consumers’ participation: we propose you some tips in the section "How to be part of it".

Challenges

For NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto®, 6% of the coffee cup GHG emissions is caused by the capsules end-of-life process. Improving this is an environmental priority. Empty used coffee capsules are recognised as packaging by the European legislation and hence contribute financially to the national schemes for recovery and recycling of used packaging. Unfortunately, capsules containing coffee grounds are not recognised as packaging by the European legislation and, as a result, these are generally not accepted by national schemes for recovery and recycling of used packaging, except in Germany. In Germany, all NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® capsules are already recovered by the local Green Dot organisation, so that our capsules are valorised and generate energy. In other countries, we are testing specific recovery solutions.

Our Goals

  • Improve capsules end-of-life through recycling or energy recovery
  • Improve capsules collection and increase the number of collection points in key locations all over each country every year

What We Are Doing

  • We develop collection and recycling specific solutions for recovering our used capsules, empty or not.
  • In Portugal, where we have implemented capsule collection, we recycle the round plastic coming from the capsules to build urban furniture and use coffee grounds for composting. Wastewater generated through the process is treated then recycled for washing and irrigation.

WHAT WE HAVE ACHIEVED

  • In 2010, Portugal became the first country to have a dedicated system for the recycling of our capsules with 50 collection points.
  • Since we started, more than 50 tons of capsules have been collected for recycling, with increasing quantities every year.
